Photographer Cybele Malinowski was born in Sydney but spent her formative years in Vienna, Austria. After returning to Australia, she went on to study architecture at The University of Sydney and it was this formal training in design that turned out to be paramount to her visual and spatial aesthetics in photography.
Turning to professional photography in 2005, Cybele has since galvanised her place in the industry with her bright, bold and unmistakable imagery, shooting the who’s who of music and fashion royalty.
She regularly shoots editorial features for Australia’s leading magazines and is commissioned to put her unique spin on a range of advertising campaigns for some of Australia’s most iconic brands. Her portfolio has recently expanded to include cutting-edge GIF work and video shoots.
Showing her personal work is a crucial part of Cybele’s creative development and self-exploration. In January 2014, after two years in the making, she launched her ongoing personal project “Model-Maison” which profiles off-duty models in their homes. This project of love and dedication has seen her shoot in model’s homes all over the suburbs of Sydney, Los Angeles, New York, London, Ukraine and Shanghai.
Always up for challenging herself and progressing as a photographer, Cybele made time in her hectic schedule to also complete a Masters in Photography at Sydney College of the Arts in 2015.
Cybele is also the founder of AGENDER, a platform for change which celebrates the great talent, wisdom and experience of women in the photographic industry in Australia. Its key goal is to bolster the careers of female photographers, and in turn not only inspire a new generation of young women, but to also recognise and work towards equal wages and opportunities for women within the industry. What started as an idea of Cybele's two years ago, AGENDER was officially launched on March 8, 2018 - International Women's Day. With sponsorship from Canon, The Hyatt Regency and Sun Studios, Cybele spearheaded a series of events for the launch including a photographic exhibition showcasting custom-shot pieces from nine of Australia's most talented female photographers with all print proceeds going to the Sydney Women's Fund; and a pop up photo studio in the lobby of the Hyatt where these female photographers captured portraits of successful strong women such as journalist Sandra Sully, 2018 Australian of the Year Professor Michelle Simmons, and City of Sydney Councillor Jess Scully among others. Cybele hopes AGENDER will raise awareness of the challenges and paradigms that women come across within photography and ideally instigates change for future generations of female creatives.
