After completing a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Communication at University of Western Sydney, Steven Popovich discovered his initial love of illustration had evolved into a passion for the visual - photography.
It was no wonder then that his qualifications led him into the design industry, working on print and packaging jobs for boutique studios. “I would always try to bring my photography skill set into each of my design jobs. If there wasn’t much photography happening in the office, I’d be shooting tests in my spare time” recalls Popovich. It was this experience working agency-side that allowed Popovich to explore his passion for photography in a systematic environment – from pitches to creative briefs, to shooting, retouching, designing and finishing art, through to press checks.
This valuable knowledge in both photography and design steered him in a new direction – working side by side with some of Australia’s leading photographers in digital and retouching. This only fuelled his desire to forge his own path and branched out on his own. He has been shooting professionally ever since.
His all-rounded experience and diverse array of skills shapes the way he approaches photography. “In beauty and fashion, I love to shoot in a way that has some sense of emotion” Popovich says. His approach is methodical, always asking the questions: Does it have a purpose? What’s the proposition? What’s the underlying idea and direction?
In 2017, Popovich was invited to join Network Agency + Management.
